not dark yet bob dylan

Not Dark Yet was one of two singles from the 1998 album "Time Out Of Mind".  The song was released as a single but it did not chart anywhere.

According to Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, the original version of this song was faster, but Dylan changed it into a Civil War ballad when it came time to record the song.

There is a music for this one recorded in memphis in 1997.

Artists who have covered this song that you may want to check out include Robyn Hitchcock, Barb Jungr, Julie Felix, Kristi Huke, Jimmy LaFave, Eric Clapton, Silversun Pickups, Trey Gunn, Ruby Amanfu, Allison Moorer, Calum Scott, Lucinda Williams, Tom Jones and Dave Gahan & Soulsavers.

You'll also find the song in film and TV including Wonder Boys, The Passion Of The Christ, Why We Fight, Masked And Anonymous, Life Itself, Californication, Knock Around Guys and Last Flag Flying.

Not Dark Yet Lyrics

Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Well, I've been to London and I been to gay Paris
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of the world full of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Not Dark Yet Tips

This a mellow number from Dylan using just three chords which are C, Ab and F. You can use a basic rhythm pattern of down down down up down up and repeat this using a few riffs here and there.

I have to be honest, I'm not sure where I got this version from as it is different from the original version which has more than three chords. I don't recall if this was from someones cover I was asked to look at or if it's from some obscure version Bob did somewhere.

As you know, you can put two or three of the same Dylan songs side by side and listen to them and there are all different, and it's Bob singing all of them. If I had listened to the original video version, it would have been slightly different from this version presented here.

No lead in this song but just a few string bends at the end of several lines in the song after the line "but I'm gettin there".
