This song was released back in 1984 by Gary Glitter a.k.a. Paul Francis Gadd. The song has always been a popular tune during the holiday season. Between 1985 and 1995 it was one of the most played songs on UK radio.
Although a sad song about war, this is one of those popular Christmas songs for guitar because it's easy to play and has no picking involved, just rhythm.
James Peirpont wrote this song back in 1857. The song was not intended to be sung during the Christmas season but instead for the Thanksgiving time frame. Benny Goodman recorded the song in 1935 and had a #18 hit. Later on Glenn Miller and his band recorded the song in 1941 had a #5 hit.
Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters also recorded the song in 1943 and had a #19 hit. And since then many artists have covered this song as part of their holiday music.
