Matchbox was a song that was written back in 1927. But when Carl Perkin's father tried to remember the song as a suggestion for a second song Carl was looking for to complete his single, old pops couldn't remember it. So Jerry Lee Lewis, who was a session musician at Sun records, started to play a melody. Perkins joined in and a different song emerged but with the same title. On Dec 4th 1956 they recorded the song. Later that day Johnny Cash and Elvis showed up and joined Jerry Lee and Carl in the studio. Imagine being a fly on the wall in that moment.

Matchbox Lyrics

Well, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
Yeah, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
I ain't got no matches but I got a long way to go

Well, I'm an old poor boy and I'm a long, long way from home
I'm an old poor boy and I'm a long, long way from home
Guess I'll never be happy; everything I do is wrong.

Well, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
Yeah, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
I ain't got no matches but I got a long way to go.

Let me be your little dog 'til your big dog come
Let me be your little dog 'til your big dog come
When your big dog gets here, show him what this little puppy done

Well, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
Yeah, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
I ain't got no matches but I got a long way to go

Well, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
Yeah, I'm sitting here wondering would a matchbox hold my clothes?
I ain't got no matches but I got a long way to go

For the record, The Beatles also covered this song in 1964 and had a #17 hit on several charts. But that's all I have.
