1. Frosty The Snowman

Gene Autry was the first artist to record this song and released his version back in 1950. It's a holiday song for sure, but it's not really about the subject of Christmas when you analyze the lyrics. The original lyric is "I'll be back again someday" vice "I'll be back on Christmas Day". The Jimmy Durante version is the one associated with the cartoon of frosty many have grown up viewing over the years. The two writes of Frosty, Walter Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson also wrote Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer the yea before in 1949.

Both version hit #7 0n the Pop charts and Autry had a #4  on the US Country charts in 1950. Johnny Mathis had a #1 in 2003 with this song.

2. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

This song has a leaning towards Christmas, but really can just be associated with the winter season and joyous anticipation of Christmas. First recorded by Andy Williams in 1963, the song appears on his Christmas album from that year. The song was originally written for his Christmas show for the 2nd season, and just got repeated each year and then became a standard holiday song with the passing of time.

3. Let It Snow

Writer Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne were sweating it out in Hollywood Ca back in 1945 and wrote this number during a heatwave imagining a cooler time and place. This is one of those songs about winter not Christmas but made it's way into the holiday season of songs over the years. Vaughn Monroe released his version in 1945-46 and it became a #1 hit. Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and even Jessica Simpson all recorded the song but never had a #1 with the song. That original is the standard.

4. Sleigh Ride

This song took a few years to develop and like the song above, was written during a heatwave, this time in 1946 by Leroy Anderson and he finished the composition of the music in 1948. Two years later Mitchell Parish wrote lyrics to the song. The number was recorded in 1946 but without lyrics. The Andrew Sisters were the first to record the song in 1950. Over the years the lyrics "birthday party" were replaced with "Christmas party" to associate the song with the holidays. Many artists including The Ronettes, Johnny Mathis and Gwen Stefani have all recorded this song.

5. Winter Wonderland

This number goes all the way back to 1934. Richard Smith wrote the lyrics while in hospital being treated for tuberculosis in Scranton Penn. The lyrics were altered slightly in 1947. Richard Himber recorded a version in 1934 as did Guy Lombardo, who went on to have a huge hit with the song in 1934.
