The Old Rugged Cross Chords And Lyrics by Alan Jackson

Welcome to The Old Rugged Cross chords and lyrics song page by Alan Jackson where you'll find my acoustic guitar demo, purchase link for a full lesson, the lyrics to the song as well as a free .pdf sheet you can download and some rhythm tips.

An Evangelist back in 1912 by the name of George Bennard wrote The Old Rugged Cross. The rights to the song were purchased a few years later for between $50-$500, and the first recording was not until 1921 by a female evangelist named Virginia Asher.

Of course Alan Jackson had to have this one on his 2006 album of old traditional gospel tunes entitled Precious Memories. There were no singles released from this album. I bet if George Bennard heard this version he would be mighty proud.

The Old Rugged Cross Lyrics

On a hill far away - stood an old rugged Cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old Cross -where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

To the old rugged Cross, I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He'll call me some day - to my home far away
Where his glory forever I'll share

So I'll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
